The Brain Stem
Location: The brainstem is located at the juncture of the cerebrum and the spinal column. The brainstem consists of the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla oblongata.
Function: The brainstem allows for relay of signals between the brain and the spinal cord. It also coordinates motor signals sent from the brain to the body. Additionally, the brain stem controls life supporting functions of the peripheral nervous system, such as alertness, arousal, breathing, blood pressure, digestion, heart rate. |
