The Hypothalamus
Anatomy: The hypothalamus is located below the thalamus and above the pituitary gland and brain stem. It is about the size of an almond.
Function: The hypothalamus links the endocrine system with the nervous system. It also helps the brain maintain the body's internal balance, or homeostasis. It does so by producing releasing and inhibiting hormones which stop and start the production of other hormones throughout the body. It plays a role in maintaining many of the body's key processes, such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance (thirst), appetite, body weight, glandular secretions of the stomach and intestines, and sleep cycles. |
